Used medicinally for centuries, the power of turmeric can’t be denied. Many of the benefits of this root come from a substance called curcumin, the pigment which gives turmeric its bright orange color. Some items on turmeric’s lengthy list of health benefits include:

Prevents inflammation

Improves liver function

Speeds bruise healing

Prevents occurrence and replication of cancer cells

Protects the heart

Reduces risk of Alzheimer’s

And so on and so on… Turmeric’s warm, peppery flavor is perfect for seasoning soups, grains, stir-fries, and curries. Did we happen to mention that it’s also a digestive aide so it even helps eat itself!

Available in 5 or 30 pound quantity, our organic Hawaiian turmeric root is all set and ready to make you feel better. 303-299-9500

From La Hora Nacional
February 2, 2012

Heavy rains have flooded 2,000 hectares [approximately 4,950 acres] of banana plantations on the Ecuadorian coast. Other crops that were affected are cocoa, coffee, and rice.

“Infrastructure is needed to control the river channels,” Segunda Zona Agriculture Chamber president Evaristo Baque was quoted as saying. He suggested river dredging and planting trees on riverbanks as two measures that could be used to alleviate the problem.

Yet, as of now, the necessary infrastructure to avoid flooding has not been implemented. Baque stated that weather-related problems in winter were endemic for the Ecuadorian agricultural industry and implied that government should step in to fix the issue.

What this means for Grower’s: we’re pretty low on bananas. Everyone, in fact, is pretty low on bananas because Ecuador is the main supplier for many. This international shortage may hurt a bit but it’s also the perfect time to experiment with more local produce. Call now for some great deals on CA citrus! 303-299-9500

Nearly half of all parents interviewed declared the main factor in their organic decision was the health of their families. Parents simply don’t want to risk the “…effects of pesticides, hormones, and antibiotics…or artificial ingredients” found in most conventionally grown or processed foods.

This news should encourage all in the produce business to realize that organic is more than just a trend; it’s a way of life!

We recently posted on how to peel garlic in a few nanoseconds but what if we had a recipe that didn’t even require that short effort? We do – the great and powerful Garlic Stock!

GARLIC STOCK
4 whole garlic bulbs, unpeeled, broken up, and cloves smashed with the side of a knife
1/2 teaspoon sea salt
9 cups water

- In a large pot over high heat, combine the garlic, salt, and water. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to medium-low, and simmer, uncovered, for about 1 hour.

- Strain the garlic cloves, pressing down on them to extract all their liquid and discard or (better yet) compost them.

Like veggie stock, this homemade broth adds a rich and worth-it flavor to any soup, scramble, stir-fry, salad dressing, or pot of cooked grains. Use or freeze within 5 days for the freshest flavor.

Adapted from Bryant Terry’s Vegan Soul Kitchen

Thanks to our friends at Pizza Fusion for the glowing GO review! We love it when our customers are happy. Here’s a highlight:

“I am an early riser, often awake at 3:00 in the morning getting ready for my day. One such day, I awoke with a panicked ‘I forgot to place my produce order last night!’. So I dialed Grower’s Organic, prepared to grovel in to the answering machine. To my surprise, Brian Freeman answered the phone. So, a friendly voice to speak to in the middle of the night and a beautiful organic produce delivery later that morning…what more could one ask for in regards to customer service and business integrity?”
